Q: Isn't the popularly used phrase "Thus far" incorrect usage?
"Thus" seems like a transition word to demonstrate something, a sister to the word "therefore." Saying, "Therefore far," doesn't make sense. Shouldn't people say, "Up until this point," or "So far"?
Catchy phrases bug me. Everyone is running around saying, "Thus far," to try to sound smart. Let's put an end to this madness!
A: It's short for "thus, so far." You are correct that it isn't correct usage in very formal writing.
