Recently collected quotes on:  populism, political correctness in academia, Chris Dorner, language, and more. Enjoy        - Cagey

"Their acolytes depicted the surge of the Tea Party in 2009 as unprecedented fanaticism, rather than the grassroots mobilization that democracies encourage. The partisanship of congressional Republicans, not much different from the partisanship of Democrats during George W. Bush’s second term, has been recast as sore-loser bitterness (tinged with racism)."
"On a range of issues -- from entitlement reform to guns to immigration to social policy -- conventional conservatism has been branded as feverish, know-nothing extremism. Aided by a media that shares all of Obama’s sensibilities, the trick has been a cynical wonder that keeps enabling the most ideological administration in memory to claim the middle ground."

“It almost seems as though we’re looking for excuses for people to not have to take their commitments seriously,” Edwards told FoxNews.com. “It’s beyond political correctness; it’s almost like an excuse to do nothing. It’s like societal nihilism, where nothing matters.”

- Tammy Edwards on the University of Missouri's guidance to faculty to not schedule major events on pagan holidays.

"L.A. Mayor Tony Villar informs us that he 'will not tolerate this reign of terror' by C. Dorner. So his answer is to have the police shoot up suspected vehicles before ascertaining who is in them. Nice solution for a Progressive who wants to disarm responsible citizens and militarize the police. The panic they are exhibiting is the same response they claim is the reason why we must be disarmed. Don't buy into the Progressive plan to make every life episode a CRISIS and an opportunity for government to rob you of your earnings and claim to be the only ones to help. As Americans, we used to do it all by ourselves.

"Since the 1960s, New Age liberals have been attempting to overturn core American values, especially by transforming the meaning of words that have long been in use. Similar to communist revolutionaries in Eastern Europe throughout much of the twentieth century, contemporary American liberals have discovered that the best way to alter behavior is to penetrate the mind by transforming our vocabulary."
"Finally, one of the key words liberals have gleefully appropriated is 'progressive.' Liberal values are cast as forward-looking, leading to a better, brighter future. And conservative values are tainted as leading Americans toward a dark, superstitious, bigoted and medieval past. In reality, “progressivism” is a philosophy that has already been tried and rejected numerous times: In the ancient world it was called Epicureanism and had short shrift as it was supplanted by polytheism and then Christianity; in the declining years of the Roman Empire, sexual permissiveness was rejected in favor of the intellectual and spiritual brilliance of Christianity; and in the twentieth century the promise of a social utopia based on government redistribution of wealth—communism—also collapsed. Thus, “progressives” harken to past models that invariably fail; conservatives see the bright future of a world that embraces the highest form of philosophy on earth, faith in God, in tandem with the best political and economic system ever created: democracy and free markets."

"Once we recognize that the liberal revolution always begins with words, we are armed to counter it."

- Dr. Grace Vuoto, "The liberal abuse of the English language"

"If you charged somebody with 50 crimes on what looked like a fairly simple thing, judges thought you were reaching and they would throw it out. Politically it looked bad -- but the culture has devolved to the point where that's just normal now," Reynolds said.
He believes the time may be ripe for a "loser pays" system in criminal trials. If a defendant is acquitted of charges, or charges are thrown out, the prosecution should bear the court costs of those charges.
"Prosecutors have absolute immunity from civil suit, so when they misbehave, when they engage in misconduct, there's no remedy for a defendant," he said.

On throwing everything at defendants and hoping something sticks - re: Aaron Swartz of RSS and Reddit

Excerpted from: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/02/15/win-at-all-costs-suicide-computer-whiz-prompts-look-at-federal-prosecutors/#content#ixzz2L2LVxq3T

I have long perceived a bias in the mainstream media and have for years been frustrated with its implications for our society and nation. The political slant inherent in modern journalism is no longer unexpected and is even tolerable when social and political issues are the topic of debate. When media bias begins to affect our national security, however, the threshold of acceptability is crossed. When media takes the side of our enemies because of political differences with our president, it's time to say ''enough is enough.''

Frequent use of terms like ''enemy,'' ''foe,'' ''bad guys,'' ''Jap,'' etc., to refer to our WWII opponents contrast sharply with the ''insurgents,'' ''freedom fighters,'' ''opposition forces,'' and other benign terms used today. Instead of stories praising heroic Marines decimated by treacherous ''Japs'' who lured their prey in by flying a flag of truce or by whistling the Marine Corps hymn, modern journalists use military setbacks to suggest that the entire military campaign is wrong-headed. Rather than proudly reporting the story of allied paratroopers who killed over 200 German soldiers on a Dutch bridge when they refused to surrender, modern reporters ignore the hostile fire taken by our helicopters from an Iraqi gathering and report that American troops murdered dozens in a wedding party. Rather than reporting the military victory the U.S. Navy narrowly won vs. the Japanese at Leyte Gulf and minimizing stories of the campaign's command-and-control failures, modern journalists now, as a rule, focus on the failures and negatives and minimize the positive. Rather than celebrating our armies' victory against the fight-to-the-death Germans in the Ruhr valley and ignoring the destruction of nearly every house and factory, our reporters today decry the wall of a mosque damaged in a firefight and ignore the fact that terrorists were firing at our boys from this supposedly sacred site.

Again, I am not surprised and generally not offended by the generic liberal bias of the mainstream media - it's become your trademark. The use of this bias to denigrate, demonize, and undermine the efforts of our military forces and our Commander in Chief and his staff in a time of war, however, does offend me. Your falling subscribership and ratings should tell you that many Americans are equally offended. I call on you to examine your biases and your practices ... and start supporting our troops, our President, and our nation in a non-partisan manner. Your political differences, as during World War II, should not be forgotten, but they should be put on the back burner when reporting on our war effort or national policies.

"Two comfortable institutions of the liberal media establishment, the Pew Research Center and the Project for Excellence in Journalism, have discovered once again that five times as many national reporters (34 percent vs. 7 percent) identify themselves as liberal than conservative. As for that broad middle of 54 percent that declares itself to be “moderate,” just consider them liberals with an honesty problem."

"First published in 1909, London's story of a young sailor striving to win love and fame as a writer is a touching portrayal of youtful idealism and its demise. A blistering ritique of the magazine trade, it's also one of the best how-to books in American literature."

True?
Why is it that none of the disturbed and evil men, who steal guns, then go and kill movie-goers and children in school, has ever been identified as a conservative?

Ft Hood ~~ Registered Democrat ~ Muslim
Columbine ~~~ Too young to vote; both families were registered Democrats and progressive liberals
Virginia Tech ~~~ Wrote hate mail to President Bush and to his staff ~ Registered Democrat
Colorado Theater ~~~ Registered Democrat; staff worker on the Obama campaign;
Occupy Wall Street participant; progressive liberal
Connecticut School Shooter --- Registered Democrat; hated Christians,
Common thread is that all of these shooters were progressive liberal Democrats."
Do you see a pattern here?

"Finally, the chickens have come home to roost for the too numerous law schools in this country. Too many law graduates, who do not go on to practice law due to a dearth of jobs, with too much student loan debt. Too many third, fourth, and fifth tier law schools, whose JD degrees are not worth much more than the paper they are printed on. Ironic, but appropriate, that this problem has spawned lawsuits aimed at law schools with over-inflated employment statistics."
"Our nation is facing a potential shortage of health care providers (primary care physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, PA's, etc...) as baby boomers are getting older, and yet, the number of law schools far outnumbers the medical schools. I don't think that the nation is facing a shortage of attorneys."
"While we all need good lawyers, the attorney glut is likely responsible for the abundance of frivolous lawsuits and our litigious mindset in this country. When my 6 year-old tells his sister "I'm going to sue you," in the midst of an argument, I realize, this has become an unfortunate part of our cultural fabric."

"A couple of people mention that this lesbian has 'family values' being the mother of her son. Really? We have all kinds of males and females who have mixed up emotions and values because they have a missing father. There is no way that these women can provide the communications and teachings that a good father can provide to a son. Being a son has sexual impacts that can't be provided from a female no matter how hard they try. In this case, neither females have a good sensual relationship with a male to be able to transfer emotions and feelings that come from being male. The biggest issue in all of the liberation concepts is that we have thrown righteousness out with the bathwater and we have tried to provide justice in all relations and situations. We are a society that is on the edge of loosing consciousness as to what is right. We have taken the lowest road to allow anything to be seen as OK as long as it provides equality by allowing everyone to do whatever they want to do. The next thing will be do we allow men to have more than one wife if all the wives agree to living in a communal relationship or on the other hand, for one wife to have more than one husband. It will only be justice if we allow them to do what they want to do the same as we allow hetero or homosexual couples to do what they want to do. It is even being pushed that pedophiles should have equality to have sex with younger partners. You see when we throw righteousness out the window we have no clear foundation upon which to build society, and everyone ends up doing whatever they want without regard to others. Providing equality can also have backwards rebounds. What if all of the super rich started claiming equal rights for taxes. In other words, equality might be that everyone must pay 15 % of earned income without any kind of deductions. How would our courts handle such a trial when it is so freely giving out equality first one place and then another in all other areas, but not when it comes to taxes!"

"Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: - Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm;... - Life isn't always fair; - And maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, don't spend more than you can earn and adults, not children, are in charge. His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding a...n unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife Discretion, his daughter Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers - I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone."

"Well look: if you're a hacker, and if you want to enhance your reputation within your peer group -- which is, let's not forget, comprised mainly of historically and geopolitically ignorant youngsters who believe that "V for Vendetta" is an accurate depiction of contemporary world affairs -- you don't go after genuine tyranny (which the educational authorities have left you ignorant about) but instead attack your own government, whose faults (but not virtues) have been drummed into you by your schools and by the media all your life. I don't blame the hackers at all. Its their parents and their teachers who are effectively guilty for what they've become."

ONE of the myriad ways in which the liberal mindset divides this country into "people groups" in order to destroy biblical resolve (destroying the family first, then the country).

It's like Reagan said about the Soviet Union. They're gonna implode of their own immorality. And he was right.

It eventually will happen to every communist or socialist setup. Now, some last longer than others. Even North Korea, at some point -- may not be in our lifetime -- but that's gonna blow up. Cuba's gonna blow up. The ChiComs are engaged in a shell game right now. The ChiComs wouldn't be where they are if it weren't for capitalism. They can't admit it so they're trying to keep communist control over as much of their society as they can.

The biggest fear that the ChiComs have is the people that live out in the country want to move to the cities. The ChiCom challenge, they've gotta create jobs in the countryside to keep the peasants there. If they overrun the cities looking for work, there's big trouble. But the ChiCom solution, the ChiCom route to economic power has been capitalism. So that's why I'm not going anywhere. It is gonna happen. It is gonna implode. It can't do anything other than that. As I say, it's what happens in the meantime. Just how damaged is the country going to be? And the potential for damage is great. I mean, real havoc is being wreaked here. This country is being divided purposely along racial lines and class lines.

I find it really stunning. We are going backwards in this country. We are separating people by class. We are separating people by race. We are not encouraging people to do better. We are not inspiring people to be the best they can be. We are essentially acknowledging that people are not very good and don't have much hope. Well, not "we." The Obama people are thriving by telling their voters who they ought to hate, who they ought to oppose, who they ought to try to eliminate, wipe out, in a political sense, and it's all based on race or other forms of ethnicity. It's terrible. And now the Gallup poll is out and we've lost our optimism. And I don't think it's a coincidence.

Any random, medically normal man is going to be stronger than and capable of physically mistreating 95% of the female population.
Ladies? Listen carefully. The reason men are supposed to hold the door for you and carry your books at school and generally carry on with that "chivalrous" stuff that is nowadays called "patronizing" is to civilize them. It's to teach men how to behave around women, how to properly treat them and restrain themselves around women.
Now, ladies, if you're unhappy about the way you are treated - just beginning with the failure to hold the door - you can blame this feminist mentality. The perverse result of this barbaric ruling is going to be an increase of violence against women.

- UNK.,  on women in direct action/combat missions

Whatever happened to the notion of men defending women and children? We have turned reality on it's head. Women are not men, and men are not women. There "really" are differences between us! Yet, we continue to castrate men (figuratively), and try to force women into some kind of non-womanhood. We have lost our collective minds! We are not only living in a post-constitutional America, but in an insane and reprobate America.

DR. BENJAMIN CARSON: There are a group of people who would like to silence everybody and have everybody go along to get along, but that's not going to be very helpful for us in the long run, in terms of solving our problems. And somebody has to be courageous enough to actually stand up to, you know, the bullies.

DR. CARSON: One of the things I also said during the speech is there will be some people who will say, 'but you’re a doctor and you’re a surgeon, you should be sticking to that.' And I mentioned the fact that five physicians signed the Declaration of Independence and were involved in the framing of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and several other things.
There’s absolutely no reason at all that physicians, scientists, shouldn’t be involved in things that affect all of us. We’re people who've learned how to make decisions based on facts, empirical data, rather than on ideology, and one of the geniuses, one of the real things that made us a great nation, is that we brought people from all backgrounds into the legislative process. So that all of us would be able to place our interests there and we've gone significantly away from that.
And no one goes up to a lawyer and says why are you getting involved in this, that and the other thing. I don't see why they would say it to a physician, who has more education than anyone else in society.

DR. CARSON: There’s no question that [President Obama] has advocated, you know, basically a policy of tax the rich. And I have advocated a policy that comes from the Bible, which is a very fair policy of proportional taxation. If it was good enough for God, why wouldn’t it be good enough for us? The minute you deviate away from that, you begin to get into all kinds of biases. And one could legitimately make the argument that the rich pays too many taxes. The top 1% pays 37% of the taxes, the top 5% [pays] 59% of the taxes, but they don't make that much of the income. One could make that argument.
DR. CARSON: I'm very focused on education and getting the populace back to where it used to be -- like back in 1831 when Alexis de Tocqueville was so impressed -- because an uneducated populace will fall for anything.
And if you and you talk to most people, they mean well but they don't have much of a breadth of education, of knowledge, of understanding of what the real issues are and, therefore, they listen to pundits on television who tell them what they're supposed to think and they keep repeating that and pretty soon they say, 'Oh, well that must be true.'

"...Words are power. If you can change the way people refer to anything, you change the perception. Like the difference between "illegal alien" and "undocumented worker", for instance. From a psychometric perspective, the first term is comprised of two highly negative terms, while the second contains one term with neutral loading, and one with positive loading. All part of "doublespeak", or any other form of propaganda. When you allow any group control of both language and information, then you can expect to see 'fundamental transformation'."

Flotsam and jetsam: Cagey quote compendium

Let's ring in the new year with some good quotes.

From an article about leftists in Hollywood criticizing the Obama White House:
LINK: http://www.gossipcop.com/matt-damon-obama-elle-magazine-one-term-president-balls/
The leftists in Hollywood believe - as SERFS do - that, once "It is accomplished" (their socialist agenda), things will just be BETTER. What they fail to understand is that THEY are the very vehicles for the opiate delivery system of slavery. Once successful, the movement won't need them, and, thus - will simply eliminate them. Once the government has control of everything, there will not only be no NEED for their services - freedom of expression will no longer even be TOLERATED. They are ushering in their own (and our) slavery. The "court jesters" will only be given influence for so long before their king settles all matters, for once-and for all.

From the comments of an article regarding the Girl Scouts' admission of a so-called transgender 7 year old boy:

“He is a 7 year old boy, so he can not be a girl scout!! He is not a girl and doesn't know what transgender means. I have a 5 year old who wants to be a ninja, but I cannot raise him like a ninja because that would be absurd. When this child grows up he will have options to explore but he is a boy and theres nothing any of us can do about that now.”

From an article by Selwyn Duke on the flawed nature of atheism:

LINK: http://thenewamerican.com/opinion/selwyn-duke/10238-christopher-hitchens-godlessness-is-not-great-how-atheism-poisons-everything

That is to say, Hitchens claimed that religion was the cause of all sorts of bad things, such as “sexism,” murder, and oppression. Yet can you scientifically prove that anything is bad? If there is no God, it follows that what we label “morality” is just an invention of man. But then what is it but consensus opinion, but perspective? Sure, we may take it as axiomatic that murder is wrong, but an axiom is a self-evident truth that requires no evidence. And what was Hitchens’ famous saying?

“That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”

Quotes from the comments on an article about "gay" coffee:

Being gay is something to tolerate, not "celebrate".
Associating things with homosexuality in order to be trendy and gain favor with the morally and socially misguided is just another of a long line of examples of the decay of our society and "defining deviancy down".

From the comments of an article about a lady who donated a kidney to a complete stranger:
Being a christian is irrelevant - Andy, Portsmouth, 29/12/2011 7:45
----------------------Andy, no one is trying to take away the credit from this wonderful lady, but we should not take away her faith either, the very faith that drove her to believe 'God said it was right'. The problem with Atheism is: when a person commits an inhuman crime against another in the name of religion, then 'religion is the root of all evil', yet when someone is driven by their faith in God to do something they themselves believe they will not do if not for their faith, atheists don't want to acknowledge the fact that the idea of God isn't bad after all. (spelling corrected)

From an article about Girl Scouts of America misdirecting and misleading Girl Scouts to trust left-wing propaganda machine Media Matters:
Hey Encinom, I’m not religious, nor do I give a rat’s behind about religious issues in politics, but this goes way beyond religion. The liberal philosophy is NOT something I want to indoctrinate my children with. The last thing I want to see is my children grow up becoming your typical whiny, spoiled, petty, entitled, crybaby, “victim,” liberals. I actually want them to be independent, strong, and open-minded, not some self-serving, self-righteous, 2-faced pseudointellectual preaching open-mindedness and tolerance, while stereotyping and generalizing against anyone who disagrees with them. You leftists are absolutely pathetic, and are no different than any religioius fanatic, or brainwashed collective-think sheep in N.Korea et al. In many ways, you are no different than the little hormonal girls you are trying to brainwash in the Girl Scouts. So go back to Media Matters, and stroke your insecure ego. After all, you bear no responsibility for anything you do, huh? It’s all the fault of someone else. Dingbat.

From the comments in a forum discussing the poor treatment of a video gamer by a customer sales rep:
You nerds are sublimating all of your pent-up anger and shame from all of the childhood bullying you ever suffered on Mr. Christoforo. Give it up. Continuing to beat up on him will never compensate for your prior and current athletic and social inadequacies. You have become the bullies you revile -- except with no varsity letter and no cheerleader poontang. So go back to your geek lairs in your parents' basements and resume posting pictures of your cats and toothy homeschooled wives. The winners will be collecting our year-end bonuses shortly, and snorting cocaine off of the asses of hotties you can only dream about. /dons asbestos suit
Russ1642: buckler: Nihilist's Guide to Reticent Entropy: So basically, in order for me to succeed in this world, I have to be willing to take advantage of the kindness of a teacher or "save the world" type of person, and in order to get their attention, I have to seem defective in the first place.

~~
P1: Seeming non-defective works against me because nobody like this wants to come to my rescue and fix me. And here I am, thinking I shouldn't beg or look for charity, when the real way to succeed is to find someone charitable and milk them dry. Well, apparently being a type-A Alpha male who's little more than a bully who's willing to connive and step on anyone you have to in order to advance works well, too. Nice, huh?

P2: Find a book on sociopathy or psychopathy. You'll see that Christoforo fits the model very well. These are the kinds of people who can do pretty much any act, up to and including murder, and then justify it afterwards. They think they're the victim, that they've done nothing wrong. Pretty much the last people on the planet you want to emulate.
P1: This wraps it up nicely. I really wonder what it would be like to be a complete sociopath for a day, completely uncaring about the consequences of any act I did even if I get caught doing it.

From a Washington Times article quoting outspoken Rep. Michelle Bachman on the problems of government regulation and business formation:
Our tax code has 3.8 million words and is too complicated for the average American to understand, and it has a corporate tax rate of almost 40 percent that makes America hopelessly uncompetitive. It advantages companies large enough to hire an army of lawyers to exploit it. I’ll end the practice of crony capitalism and special-interest influence in Washington because, as a federal tax lawyer, I’ll abolish the tax code, the place where most of Washington’s influence peddling occurs. I’ll replace it with one that is simpler, fairer and flatter, in which every American pays something, even if it is $10 a year, because every American has a stake in America.

Reforming our tax code and ending crony capitalism will send a signal to small businesses, the true job-creation engine of our economy, that they’ll be treated the same as large corporations. Lowering corporate tax rates will make American businesses more competitive and keep them from shipping jobs overseas. That overhaul will include repatriating the more than $1 trillion held overseas by U.S. corporations that could have an immediate private-sector stimulative effect on our economy. These economic policies will send a signal that we will enact permanent free-market solutions for our economy and end the temporary gimmicks that have had such devastating effects.

From the comments in a forum discussing whether hipsters find Kindles or old books trendier:
What makes you a hipster online changes so fast that you can go from being a boring asshole to a hipster and back again several times a day.
What makes you a hipster in real life is those stupid hipster glasses.
sigdiamond2000: So wait...am I or am I not a hipster for reading books
I want to make sure I'm not offending the sensibilities of the fat, sexless loser who keeps submitting these "hipster" headlines.
Butthurt much?
The cute thing about hipsters is they appear to represent themselves as intellectuals, yet appear to accept/reject others on superficialities.
Anyway, I like physical books because I can get them for as little as FREE and I can give them to people when I'm done with them.

“That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.” -Christopher Hitchens: Godlessness Is Not Great — How Atheism Poisons Everything

  • 2000s Jaguar S-type

Older, '90s style Jag, just as the beautiful
lines and grill started coming off.

Which limp-wristed lisper decided to make the newer S-type Jaguars look so gottamned effeminate?  With the effete, heart-shaped/butt-shaped grill I guess I can understand why mechaphilia exists.  There is nothing masculine about this car whatsoever and little redeeming; I would be mortified to be seen driving this car; I'd have to hire a driver so I could duck down in the back seat.
  •
If you were a store manager, and in consideration of your employees' sanity, would you have the courage to turn off the Christmas music that begins on November 1st during non-peak hours, while keeping it quiet from management?
  •   Sense experience that doesn't get enough consideration: the hearing of old mechanical sounds (LINK)
  •    "Worst First", (LINK) the idea to keep kids cooped in away from playgrounds, safe from the obsessive and incipient fear of unseen danger lurking everywhere, seems to be today's modus operandi of the Defense Department's leadership philosophy.
  •   Finally, a quote of the day: "Liberalism is the f__t upon which wafts diversity."  (source Unknown)  Balkanization, and a lack of national unity and moral outrage is what leads to incidents like the elderly man attacked in Chicago, to the extremely tragic urban blight of Detroit.  I'm not inclined to give you an earth-shattering essay defending this statement (one: that's not my writing style, two: reductio ad absurdum), please don't think I'm here to harp on ethnicity or the issues of dogmatic multiculturalism; I'm talking about the kind of permissiveness, relativism, fear and one-dimensional thinking so entrenched in our culture which has set the conditions for all this to happen.  This bystander attitude.  Don't criticize.  It's at the heart of the school lunch debate going on right now:  yeah, limited government, health public policy and so forth, but could there be an inherent cultural sub-agenda coming from top down acknowledging that America's cultural vibrance is on a track to oblivion unless we get strong again?  Physically, as well as morally?

IDIOCRACY IN THE NEWS

Martin Luther King statue:

I was trying to explain to an acquaintance why it wasn’t proper for such a statue to be built outside of the U.S.  What kind of national greatness is that?!  She said, “But I heard the Chinese are great sculptors.” So I’m looking for some good granite around here to bang my head into.

Carrier skipper will be retained in USN:

Meet Captain (CAPT) Owen Honors.  If you don't live in Awfulk, or don't follow the military, you may not have heard of CAPT Honors, the former executive officer (#2 guy) of the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier.  Running a naval unit or shore facility is a big deal, but the carrier guys are kind of a big deal.  That is a lot of steel to possibly run aground.  So the standards for the naval officer are to be "beyond reproach."  So the good captain made a series of humorous short videos to show on the ship CCTV to promote good hygiene, etc., poking fun at himself and others to drive home his points and connect with the modern audience.  So stuffy as we are, many people in and out of the military prejudged the captain, said it should end his career, that he must have zero defects and be sacrificed to the altar of political correctness.  And now today, we learned that a panel of admirals (men with God-like status in the Navy, tantamount to Generals in the Army, etc.) will spare him the ignominy of a forced "out."  We also heard of the danger of stifling thought.
“Misconduct?” said CAPT Honors' lawyer, Gittins. “That’s crap.” Speaking after the admirals’ decision, “The surface warfare community – they just don’t do that.”
Gittins said he thinks the real take-away from the case is that the Navy prefers safe, conservative leaders who don’t push the envelope or try out-of-the-box methods.

Article:  Student ranks thinning for blogging Pa. teacher
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (AP) — More than 200 parents have told a Pennsylvania school district they don't want their children taught by a teacher who called students "frightfully dim" and "disengaged, lazy whiners" on her personal blog.

Comments (like diamonds from coal, the gems are always buried at the bottom of the article):

Ever seen the movie "Idiocracy"? That is where we are headed... I have 4 of them.... all dumber than a post. Hate to say it, but it's true. I worked my #$%$ off to teach them better... they chose differently. I was "too strict" according to them. Now not one of them can hold a job. When they do work, it's for peanuts and mostly temporary work. Range in age from 18 to 26. Lazy, dumb as hell every one. `knuckleheadjim
I have said many, many times "Idiocracy" is not a movie, it is a preview.... What happens when government intervenes between parents and their children... Their interference works equally well in the financial field, equal lawsfield, immigration field, etc., etc....If I were a teacher, I am SURE I would feel the same way..

All you have to do is read Facebook posts and comments on Yahoo news articles to see the truth. More and more people are graduating from school with serious deficiencies in grammar, spelling, history and government, and critical thinking skills, but ask them about sports and entertainment and they can "skewl you". I believe that the fault for this is shared by both parents and teachers, but I also believe that the teachers would be better able to teach the kids if the government got the hell out of the education system. Teachers spend about 50% of their time with administrative issues, conforming to the #$%$ government regulations, another 25% socializing the kids (as ordered by the government), and only 25% of the time actually teaching the subjects needed to survive in the world. It's time to eliminate the unconstitutional U.S. Department of Education from the federal budget and return those powers and tax dollars to the individual school districts, teachers, and parents. Then, we need to return the disciplinary method to the schools and homes. Yes, this means corporal punishment. Better to bust their butts than to turn them over to the cops and the justice system, which is the current method. It's pathetic to see students graduating with a lifelong criminal record for schoolyard behavior. But that's another argument for another day..

Poopa-cane 2011 preparations underway
Having sortied the entire Second Fleet for
hurricane avoidance,  LT Poopers takes
shelter some two days early from
the impending U.S. East Coast
atmospheric event "Irene".

I just finished a quick meteorology seminar, and feel I know a little bit more about how hurricanes work.  Well, the weather-guessers are saying this is gonna be the big one.  Have been stocking up on pork & beans and ammo.  The CDC recommends 3 days worth of clean water (1 gal./day), dry stores, etc.  I have checklist upon checklist.  I guess I won't joke about shooting looters since this the era of political correctness.  Twain would, however.

CIVICS

"THE PROGRAM"

On Thursday, September 11th, 2011, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States . Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this tenth anniversary of one our country's worst tragedies. We do this honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

ART

The Fixx and artist George Underwood
Discussion ongoing regarding album cover selection for The Fixx's upcoming album:  Here's a gallery of George Underwood's album art: http://www.georgeunderwood.com/pages/album-covers/93 - Underwood did 'Reach the Beach', 'Pharoahs' and 'Calm Animals'.  Not being an art guy, is it safe to say his work is Surrealist? Surprises me that I hadn't looked into the artwork before, given the amount of time I've spent peering into nooks and crannies on album art origins, especially a ton of contemplation on China Crisis pairing of art and music. Cover art, and the humble liner pages are aspects of the finished music 'product', which need to remain relevant and valued!

"After Japan quake, cherry blossoms are reminder of fragility of life - and its strength"
http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5j2v8NTbEZtxvdbzopQqDwFPfgsiw?docId=6383234

Excerpt:
"Thinking about how these people living normal lives suddenly disappeared, you can't escape the feeling that humans, like the flowers, are transient things," Yoneta said. But consider this Japanese paradox: the delicate cherry blossom was also the symbol of the samurai, the epitome of Japanese valour.
The warrior class liked the flowers because they didn't cling to life, but rather showed up for the briefest spell, and fell at the peak of their splendor. In this way, they embodied the spirit of "bushido" — the way of the warrior that combines stoicism, bravery, and self-sacrifice.
These days, people invoke bushido less often than the common man's down-to-earth version — "gaman." It means gritting your teeth and just getting on with life. When people refer to Japan's salarymen as modern-day samurai, it's taken not so much in a swashbuckling sense but for the way these men in suits endure crushing, monotonous toil, and display unwavering loyalty to a common cause.
And amid death, people of all stripes here are plowing ahead with life, in an orderly and co-operative way. Many are already starting to return to the sites of their devastated homes, and thinking cool-headedly about how to start over amid Japan's biggest catastrophe since World War II.

"Michigan Seizes Assets of Town" (Title edited for brevity, pomposity)
http://www.pensitoreview.com/2011/04/20/michigan-gop-fiscal-martial-law-czar-seizes-assets-of-predominantly-african-american-town/
The impoverished former industrial town of Benton Harbor has become a flashpoint in the controversy over the new law that allows the governor to appoint Emergency Managers with virtually unlimited authority over local governments.
On Thursday the state-appointed Emergency Manager Joe Harris used the expanded powers granted by the new law to issue an order banning the city commission from taking any action without his written permission.
“They are using Benton Harbor as a test case,“ Henry said. “If they have disenfranchised the people so badly they just don’t respond to anything, they can do this all over the country.”
Editor note:  I'm not sure which side I take on this issue.  My first reaction was that this reeked of abuse of power by state officials.  However, there must be a lot more than meets the eye to this story.  People have such a lax attitude toward government today, it seems like it hardly matters "who's in charge", because the people have zero interest.  It is also incredibly difficult to affect political discourse at the individual level.  Running for local office can be compared to being in a rowboat without an oar in a sea of regs & red-tape.  Where do you go?

However, even though the party executing this is GOP, this is the kind of new tactic I think we got from the economic crash and the resultant TARP/'stimulus' ram-it-through ideology.  The question is:  Is it crucial?  How was that proven? Will it rescue the town from economic disaster?  How severe would the disaster have been?  Is this ethical?  Will the "emergency manager" be in place for a lengthy period of time?  Etc. Etc.

Notable quotes:

The beauty of passing so many laws that thwart business development is that when businesses raise their prices to compensate for the laws, the government can blame the businesses for raising prices and entact price controls, the final piece of control that will drive the U.S. into hyperinflation and empty store shelves. These laws may only be for CA, but the U.S. is working hard to catch up. ~Unknown

Excerpt:
You don't want to beat yourself up during this time. So many guys during this period of their life are hard on themselves because they feel like they should get everything right on the first try, or that they should be achieving certain milestones by a certain age. They will think -- about every part of their life -- "When am I going to get this?"

"Life After Iraq: 10 Lessons on Transitioning Out of the Military" http://www.huffingtonpost.com/don-gomez/life-after-iraq-10-lesson_b_848011.html

Excerpt:
1. Your military service will define you, whether you like it or not. With less than 1% of the population serving, you are part of a tiny minority who have shouldered incredible responsibility. If you served overseas, to many, you are exotic. People around you will find out you served (trust me) and will define you by your service. When you raise your hand in class, people will refer to you as the "military guy" or gal.

L.A. Times Duran Duran interview:
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-duran-duran-20110413,0,4899157.story
"...offers Taylor, 50, reflecting back to the early days when he and his childhood friend Rhodes were first choosing to follow in the footsteps of the musicians that inspired them, artists such as David Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk and Chic. "We were an art school band; we became a pop group because of the way we looked."
"In a way, [our success] happened so quickly, we were quite ambitious. We were very ambitious. And we achieved our goals. I certainly achieved my goals. I didn't realize how limited the idea of wanting to play Madison Square Garden was, because we achieved it within four years, and then I didn't know what to do for years after that. What I thought what it was all about had to change, it had to not be so goal-oriented."

"We've had a lot of time to ponder the question of what our job is, what we do in the world," Le Bon says. "I feel that we do something which brings people together, makes people feel good about themselves, makes people feel that they're not alone. Making people feel not alone, I feel we're providing a very useful service."
"Modern Indie College Aging Hipster Rock"  whoops, I mean 'Alternative Rock for Hipsters', "or MICAH for Short"
http://www.popmatters.com/pm/column/139554-modern-indie-college-alternative-rock-for-hipsters-micah-for-short/

Excerpt:
Because of its origins at under-the-radar college radio stations at the dawn of the ‘80s, this music first gathered under the “college rock” banner. Some of the genre’s earliest champions were U2, R.E.M., Duran Duran, INXS, Depeche Mode, and the Cure. In what became the MICAH music trend, these bands all forfeited their college-rock membership badges when they landed top-selling albums fueled by top ten hits. Fanatics who had supported these bands pre-MTV cried “sell out” and embraced the never-quite-prime-time rockers like the Replacements and Sonic Youth. By the late ‘80s, the term “college rock” was overhauled to “modern rock”, presumably because its 20-something listener base were now struggling to pony up cash for rent and car payments instead of textbook fees and pizza deliveries.

LITERATURE

"Usagi Yojimbo: Stan Sakai's Rabbit Samurai Makes the Mundane Seem Amazing"

Excerpt:
Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo, published by Dark Horse Comics, is the story of Miyamoto Usagi, a rabbit ronin (masterless samurai) who wanders the roads. He often takes odd jobs protecting villagers, hunting bandits, or briefly serving as a sword-for-hire for the feudal lords who dot the land. He's foiled assassination attempts, teamed up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, befriended gruff rhinos, and battled ninjas for more than 25 years now. Stan Sakai is one of the best (and most consistently good) cartoonists in the game, and I'm going to use his eight-page story "Jizo" to show you why.
The true beauty of Sakai's work in Usagi Yojimbo isn't just his cartooning (which is very good) or his writing (which is refreshingly to the point). It's how Sakai manages to take things we're used to, things that are considered rote or mundane, and make them compelling simply through the strength of his craft.

Excerpt:
Goal setting theory is generally accepted as among the most valid and useful motivation theories in industrial and organizational psychology, human resource management, and organizational behavior.
Many of us have learned – from bosses, seminars, and business articles – to set SMART goals. It seems natural to assume that by setting a goal that's Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound, we will be well on our way to accomplishing it.
But is this really the best way of setting goals?

It's designed to be read aloud to put you in a more ambitious mindset, focusing your thoughts and priming your brain to react ambitiously when these words, or portions of these words, come up later in your day.

And everyone is more lonely and miserable as a result.

Cagey News Compendium, January 2011: The main thought I had in building this digest of news clips was the change in political mood about a month and a half prior to the November 2010 elections. It was abundantly clear that a major turn was ahead.

Also, why has the response to Wikileaks met with such a tepid response?

Finally, stay tuned for the feature video at the end. “Ain’t that America?”

“Palin and the Left’s Status Anxiety”
http://chicagoboyz.net/archives/15616.html

“No, the best explanation for the left’s bizarre Palin obsession is status-anxiety. Status-anxiety occurs when a person believes that their position in a real or imagined social hierarchy is threatened. Leftists react emotionally to Palin because of the threat she poses to their own individual sense of status. All their other arguments are just put forth to rationalize that emotional reaction.”

The tea party protests, to quote the president, are "illegitimate" because they stand in the way of necessary change. http://blog.nj.com/njv_george_berkin/2010/10/thats_an_order_judge_overturns.html

"Conservatives responded to the ruling by saying that democracy requires that elected officials, not judges, make social policy. 'Once again, an activist federal judge is using the military to advance a liberal social agenda, disregarding the views of all four military service chiefs and the constitutional role of the Congress,' said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a social policy think tank."

"Unfortunately, it is very tempting for liberal judges, impatient with the stubbornness of less 'progressive' elements of society, to set social policy for the military and the rest of us. But allowing judges to rule – instead of the people, through their duly elected representatives – is not good practice.

La Bodega Curiosa

Vulturish Insurance Peddler
Business

I already explained to you (in a rather thoughtful note) that I wasn't interested in your whole life insurance right now because I needed to deal with other priorities first.  (Call me later this fall.) I listened to you each time you pretended to be my friend and how you quickly changed the conversation into a lure to an office call.  I looked the other way when you finally sent me the e-mail I'd asked for, and you spelled "policies" wrong ("policy's" - come on, and I'm supposed to feel good about giving you thousands of dollars?).  So each phone call I see, unanswered, on my caller i.d., is me suspended on a bridge, and you swinging an axe at the straining ropes holding our rapport.

Another Great Dream
Entertainment

The radio went flying from the table, chunks of plastic crashing to the floor and scurrying for cover.  No Bawitdaba would be playing in my kitchen this day.  Rapper Xzbit looked at me with concerned eyes.  Minutes passed, then without warning, DMX's Ruff Rydaz Anthem came on and I turned it up.  Xzbit said, "Damn man, everytime I think something about you and then you go off and do another like this.  Respect."

Donald Trump - President?
Politics

I saw the Donald on Jimmy Fallon (yes, more insomnia) last night who revealed he may be interested in throwing his hat in the ring for a 2012 candidacy.  Good for him.  I was forced into a double-take in hearing him not only blast the handful or so of OPEC chairmen artificially regulating energy, but TRULY ASTONISHED in letting China have it on our trade imbalance.  I rarely see our officials acknowledge the comparative decline in the industrial capacity of the United States, and the money pipe that dumps trillions into the Chinese economy, which has evolved beyond "near-peer competitor" into something far more dangerous.

Lastly, one guide (of many) to jive:
